In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the EX90 are reminded to check the back seat when a sensor determines the back seat is occupied. The ID.BUZZ doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Volvo EX90 (except 6-Passenger) offers an optional built in child booster seat. It’s more crash worthy than an added child seat because of its direct attachment to the seat. Volkswagen doesn’t offer the convenience and security of a built-in child booster seat in the ID.BUZZ. Their owners must carry a heavy booster seat in and out of the vehicle; EX90 owners can just fold their built-in child seat up or down.

The Volvo EX90 has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The ID.BUZZ doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The EX90 has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The ID.BUZZ doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive is standard on the EX90. But it costs extra on the ID.BUZZ.

Both the EX90 and the ID.BUZZ have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, front seat center airbag, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras and rear cross-path warning.

The EX90’s corrosion warranty is 5 years and unlimited miles longer than the ID.BUZZ’s (12/unlimited vs. 7/100,000).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the EX90 for 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volkswagen pays for maintenance for the ID.BUZZ (3/30,000 vs. 2/20,000).

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen With 22 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Volvo higher than Volkswagen.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Volvo 3 places higher in reliability than Volkswagen.

The EX90’s standard electric motors produces 120 more horsepower (402 vs. 282) and 155 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 413) than the ID.BUZZ’s standard electric motor. The EX90’s electric motors produces 67 more horsepower (402 vs. 335) and 56 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 512) than the ID.BUZZ’s optional electric motors. The EX90’s optional electric motors produces 175 more horsepower (510 vs. 335) and 159 lbs.-ft. more torque (671 vs. 512) than the ID.BUZZ’s optional electric motors.

The Volvo EX90 has standard four-wheel disc brakes for better stopping power and improved directional control in poor weather. Only rear drums come on the ID.BUZZ. Drums can heat up and make stops longer, especially with antilock brakes that work much harder than conventional brakes.

For better traction, the EX90 has larger standard tires than the ID.BUZZ (F:255/50R20 & R:285/45R20 vs. F:235/50R20 & R:265/45R20). The EX90 Ultra’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the ID.BUZZ (F:265/45R21 & R:295/45R21 vs. F:235/50R20 & R:265/45R20).

The EX90’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the ID.BUZZ’s 50 series front and 45 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the EX90 offers optional 22-inch wheels. The ID.BUZZ’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The EX90 offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The ID.BUZZ’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The EX90 has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The EX90’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The ID.BUZZ doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For greater off-road capability the EX90 has a 2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the ID.BUZZ (8.3 vs. 6.3 inches), allowing the EX90 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The EX90’s minimum ground clearance is 2.2 inches higher than on the ID.BUZZ (8.5 vs. 6.3 inches).

The EX90 is 7.4 inches shorter in height than the ID.BUZZ, making the EX90 much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

The front grille of the EX90 uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The ID.BUZZ doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The EX90 has 3.6 inches more front headroom, 3.4 inches more front legroom and .6 inches more rear headroom than the ID.BUZZ.

The EX90 has a much larger cargo volume than the ID.BUZZ with its rear seat up (67.6 vs. 18.6 cubic feet).

Pressing a button automatically lowers the EX90’s third row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The ID.BUZZ doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

The EX90’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the ID.BUZZ’s (4850 vs. 2600 pounds).

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The EX90 has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The ID.BUZZ doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The EX90’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The ID.BUZZ has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.
