Compare the2025 Volvo EC40VS 2025 Dodge Charger

2025 Volvo EC40
2025 Dodge Charger

Safety

The EC40’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Charger doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Volvo EC40 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Dodge Charger doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The EC40 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Charger doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The EC40 has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. At the same time the pretensioning seatbelts fire, removing slack from the belts. The Charger doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The EC40 has standard Post-impact braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Charger doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the EC40’s standard Hill Descent Control allow you to creep down safely. The Charger doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

Both the EC40 and Charger have rear cross-traffic warning, but the EC40 has Braking Intervention (automatically applies the brakes) to better prevent a collision when backing near traffic. The Charger’s Rear Cross Path Detection doesn’t automatically brake.

Both the EC40 and the Charger have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Warranty

The EC40 comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Charger’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The EC40’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the Charger’s (12 vs. 5 years).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the EC40 for 3 years and 30,000 miles. Volvo will pay for tire rotations, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Dodge doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Charger.

Engine

The EC40’s optional electric motors produces 90 lbs.-ft. more torque (494 vs. 404) than the Charger Daytona R/T Coupe’s standard electric motors.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the EC40 gets better mileage than the Charger:

Tires and Wheels

The EC40 Core’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 50 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Charger Daytona R/T Coupe’s standard 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the EC40 Core has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Charger Daytona R/T Coupe.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the EC40’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the Charger Coupe’s (37.4 feet vs. 40 feet).

Chassis

The Volvo EC40 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 950 to 1000 pounds less than the Dodge Charger.

The EC40 is 2 feet, 7.7 inches shorter than the Charger Daytona Scat Pack Coupe, making the EC40 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces. The EC40 is 2 feet, 7.8 inches shorter than the Charger Daytona R/T Coupe.

The EC40 is 6.1 inches narrower than the Charger, making the EC40 easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

Cargo Capacity

Pulling a handle automatically lowers the EC40’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Charger doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the EC40’s liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Charger doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Towing

The EC40 has a 2000 lbs. towing capacity. The Charger has no towing capacity.

Standard Trailer Stability Assist on the EC40 uses the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Charger doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system optional at extra cost in the Charger, the EC40 has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, outside mirror angle, climate settings and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The EC40’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children in the rear seat from operating them, but the driver can still raise and lower all of them with the lock engaged. Dodge does not offer a locking feature on the Charger’s standard power windows.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the EC40 has a standard rear wiper. The Charger doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The EC40 offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Charger doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the EC40 offers optional cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Charger doesn’t offer cornering lights. The EC40 also offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

The EC40’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Charger has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Both the Volvo EC40 and Dodge Charger offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The EC40 features standard power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the Charger’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Volvo EC40 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the Charger.

Model Availability

The EC40 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Charger doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
