For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Volvo EX40 have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Lotus Eletre doesn’t offer pretensioners for its rear seat belts.

The EX40 has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. At the same time the pretensioning seatbelts fire, removing slack from the belts. The Eletre doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The EX40 has a standard CTA Auto Brake that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Eletre doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

Both the EX40 and the Eletre have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The EX40 comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck. The Eletre’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The EX40 comes with free roadside assistance for 4 years unlimited miles. Volvo will send help if you run out of gas, need a jump-start, lock your keys in or need any assistance on the road. Lotus doesn’t give free roadside assistance for the Eletre.

The EX40’s corrosion warranty is 4 years longer than the Eletre’s (12 vs. 8 years).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the EX40 for 3 years and 30,000 miles. Volvo will pay for cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Lotus doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Eletre.

There are over 7 times as many Volvo dealers as there are Lotus dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the EX40’s warranty.

On the EPA test cycle the EX40 gets better mileage than the Eletre:

The Volvo EX40 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 1150 to 1400 pounds less than the Lotus Eletre.

The EX40 is 2 feet, 2.1 inches shorter than the Eletre, making the EX40 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The EX40 has a larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Eletre with its rear seat folded (57.5 vs. 54 cubic feet).

Optional Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the EX40 uses the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Eletre doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

A maintenance reminder system is standard on the EX40 to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Lotus doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the Eletre.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the EX40 has a standard rear wiper. The Eletre doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The EX40 offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Eletre doesn’t offer headlight washers.

The EX40’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Eletre has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.
