The V60 Cross Country’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The CR-V doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

Both the V60 Cross Country and CR-V have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The V60 Cross Country has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The CR-V’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The V60 Cross Country has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. At the same time the pretensioning seatbelts fire, removing slack from the belts. The CR-V doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The V60 Cross Country has standard Post-impact braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The CR-V doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the V60 Cross Country. But it costs extra on the CR-V.

The V60 Cross Country has a standard 360° Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The CR-V only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the V60 Cross Country has standard Cross Traffic Alert and Braking Intervention automatically engages the brakes to help avoid a collision. Only the CR-V EX/Hybrid offers Cross Traffic Monitor and the CR-V’s Cross Traffic Monitor does not include automatic braking.

Both the V60 Cross Country and the CR-V have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras and driver alert monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Volvo V60 Cross Country is safer than the Honda CR-V:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Volvo V60 Cross Country is safer than the Honda CR-V:

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the V60 Cross Country, with its five-star roll-over rating, is 5.6% less likely to roll over than the CR-V, which received a four-star rating.

Warranty

The V60 Cross Country comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The CR-V’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The V60 Cross Country’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the CR-V’s (12 vs. 5 years).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the V60 Cross Country for 2 years and 18000 miles longer than Honda pays for maintenance for the CR-V (3/30,000 vs. 1/12000).

Reliability

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the V60 Cross Country has a standard 800-amp battery. The CR-V’s 410-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

The battery on the V60 Cross Country is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the V60 Cross Country’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The CR-V’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

Engine

The V60 Cross Country’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 57 more horsepower (247 vs. 190) and 79 lbs.-ft. more torque (258 vs. 179) than the CR-V’s standard 1.5 turbo 4-cylinder. The V60 Cross Country’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid produces 43 more horsepower (247 vs. 204) and 11 lbs.-ft. more torque (258 vs. 247) than the CR-V Hybrid’s standard 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

Both the V60 Cross Country and the CR-V have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. All V60 Cross Country’s have a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily. The CR-V Hybrid doesn’t offer a way to disable start/stop.

The V60 Cross Country has 1.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the CR-V (15.9 vs. 14 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the V60 Cross Country’s brake rotors are larger than those on the CR-V:

The V60 Cross Country’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the CR-V are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the V60 Cross Country’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the CR-V (245/40R20 vs. 235/60R18).

The V60 Cross Country’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the CR-V LX’s standard 65 series tires. The V60 Cross Country’s optional tires have a lower 40 series profile than the CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the V60 Cross Country has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the CR-V LX. The V60 Cross Country’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels on the CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid.

Suspension and Handling

The V60 Cross Country has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The CR-V doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the V60 Cross Country’s wheelbase is 6.9 inches longer than on the CR-V (113.2 inches vs. 106.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the V60 Cross Country is 1.4 inches wider in the front and .2 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the CR-V.

The V60 Cross Country Ultra handles at .85 G’s, while the CR-V EX-L AWD pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The V60 Cross Country executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2.1 seconds quicker than the CR-V Sport Touring Hybrid (27.2 seconds @ .67 average G’s vs. 29.3 seconds @ .57 average G’s).

Chassis

The V60 Cross Country is 7 inches shorter in height than the CR-V, making the V60 Cross Country much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

Passenger Space

The V60 Cross Country has 1 inch more front legroom and .8 inches more rear hip room than the CR-V.

Cargo Capacity

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the V60 Cross Country easier. The V60 Cross Country’s trunk lift-over height is 25.4 inches, while the CR-V’s liftover is 28 inches.

Towing

The V60 Cross Country’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the CR-V’s (2000 vs. 1000 pounds).

Standard Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) on the V60 Cross Country uses the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The CR-V doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory seat in the CR-V EX-L/Sport-L/Sport Touring, the V60 Cross Country Ultra has a passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The V60 Cross Country Ultra has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The CR-V doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The power windows standard on both the V60 Cross Country and the CR-V have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the V60 Cross Country is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The CR-V prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

The V60 Cross Country’s front and rear power windows all open or close fully with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside the car. The CR-V’s standard passenger windows don’t open or close automatically.

If the windows are left open on the V60 Cross Country the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the CR-V can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The V60 Cross Country’s standard Keyless Entry & Drive allow you to unlock the doors from any outside door handle, open the trunk, and start the engine, all without removing the key from the pocket or purse. Pushbutton Start standard on the CR-V only offers hands-free access for the ignition, none to unlock the vehicle. Pushbutton Start is not available on the CR-V EX/EX-L/Sport/TrailSport/Sport-L/Sport Touring.

The V60 Cross Country’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The CR-V’s standard intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the V60 Cross Country to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The CR-V doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The V60 Cross Country offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The CR-V doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the V60 Cross Country has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The CR-V doesn’t offer cornering lights. The V60 Cross Country also has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the V60 Cross Country to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The CR-V doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The V60 Cross Country’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Honda only offers heated mirrors on the CR-V EX/EX-L/Sport/TrailSport/Sport-L/Sport Touring.

When the V60 Cross Country is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The CR-V’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

The V60 Cross Country’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The CR-V offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

Both the Volvo V60 Cross Country and Honda CR-V offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The V60 Cross Country features standard power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the CR-V’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

The V60 Cross Country has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats are only available on the CR-V EX/Sport. The V60 Cross Country also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the CR-V.

Standard air-conditioned seats in the V60 Cross Country Ultra keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The CR-V doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

The V60 Cross Country offers optional massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the CR-V.

The V60 Cross Country has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning is only available on the CR-V EX/EX-L/Sport/TrailSport/Sport-L/Sport Touring.

Compared to the Honda CR-V, the Volvo V60 Cross Country eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries with its standard integrated Homelink® universal remote controlled from the rear view mirror.

Compared to traditional radio, the Volvo V60 Cross Country’s standard SiriusXM satellite radio provides an unmatched listening experience. Its extensive coverage guarantees consistent, crystal-clear reception across the continental U.S., and access to over 100 channels dedicated to a multitude of genres, including music, news, sports, talk shows, and comedy, many with only limited commercial breaks. Satellite radio is only offered on the CR-V EX-L/Sport-L/Sport Touring.
