In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the EX30 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The ID.4 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The EX30 has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The ID.4 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the EX30’s standard Hill Descent Control allows you to creep down safely. The ID.4 doesn’t offer Hill Descent Control.

Both the EX30 and the ID.4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The EX30’s corrosion warranty is 5 years and unlimited miles longer than the ID.4’s (12/unlimited vs. 7/100,000).

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen With 43 fewer problems per 100 vehicles in the first three years of ownership, J.D. Power ranks Volvo higher than Volkswagen.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Volvo vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Volvo 3 places higher in reliability than Volkswagen.

The EX30’s standard electric motors produces 140 more horsepower (422 vs. 282) than the ID.4’s standard electric motor.

The Volvo EX30 has standard four-wheel disc brakes for better stopping power and improved directional control in poor weather. Only rear drums come on the ID.4. Drums can heat up and make stops longer, especially with antilock brakes that work much harder than conventional brakes.

The EX30 stops shorter than the ID.4:

For better traction, the EX30’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the ID.4 (245/45R19 vs. 235/50R20).

The EX30 has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The ID.4’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the EX30 is .2 inches wider in the front and 1.2 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the ID.4.

For greater off-road capability the EX30 Cross Country has a greater minimum ground clearance than the ID.4 (7.5 vs. 6.9 inches), allowing the EX30 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Volvo EX30 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 650 to 750 pounds less than the Volkswagen ID.4.

The EX30 is 1 foot, 1.8 inches shorter than the ID.4, making the EX30 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The EX30 has 1.1 inches more front headroom, .8 inches more front legroom and .4 inches more rear headroom than the ID.4.

A standard locking glovebox keeps your small valuables safer in the EX30. The ID.4 doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Maximum trailer towing in the Volkswagen ID.4 is limited to 2700 pounds. The EX30 offers up to a 3527 lbs. towing capacity.

The EX30 has a higher standard payload capacity than the ID.4 (992 vs. 926 lbs.).

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the EX30 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the ID.4 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

The Volvo EX30 has power folding mirrors that offer unparalleled convenience while maneuvering in tight places or parked. With the mirrors folded it’s easier to walk past and help prevent parking damage. The mirrors can be quickly unfolded when the driver is ready to leave. Power folding mirrors are only offered on the ID.4 Pro S Plus.
