Safety

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the EX30 are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Uncharted doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The EX30 has a standard front seat center airbag, which deploys between the driver and front passenger, protecting them from injuries caused by striking each other in serious side impacts. The Uncharted doesn’t offer front seat center airbags.

The EX30 has a standard Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS), which use a specially designed seat to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the WHIPS allows the backrest to travel backwards to cushion the occupants and the headrests move forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Uncharted doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The EX30 has standard Volvo On Call, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Uncharted doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the EX30 and the Uncharted have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Warranty

The EX30 comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Uncharted’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year or 14,000 miles sooner.

The EX30’s corrosion warranty is 7 years longer than the Uncharted’s (12 vs. 5 years).

Volvo pays for scheduled maintenance on the EX30 for 2 years and 20,000 miles. Volvo will pay for tire rotations, cabin filter replacement, brake fluid replacement, inspections, and any other required maintenance. Subaru doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Uncharted.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the EX30’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Uncharted (245/45R19 vs. 235/60R18).

The EX30’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Uncharted Premium’s standard 60 series tires. The EX30’s optional tires have a lower 45 series profile than the Uncharted Sport/GT’s 50 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The EX30 Ultra handles at .85 G’s, while the Uncharted GT pulls only .84 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the EX30’s turning circle is 1 foot tighter than the Uncharted’s (35.1 feet vs. 36.1 feet).

Chassis

The Volvo EX30 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 pounds less than the Subaru Uncharted.

The EX30 is 11.1 inches shorter than the Uncharted, making the EX30 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The EX30 has 2.6 inches more front headroom, .8 inches more rear headroom, .1 inches more rear legroom and 1.5 inches more rear hip room than the Uncharted.

Cargo Capacity

A standard locking glovebox keeps your small valuables safer in the EX30. The Uncharted doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Towing

Standard Trailer Stability Assist on the EX30 uses the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Uncharted doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

The EX30’s standard rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Uncharted has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The EX30’s standard GPS navigation system has a real-time traffic update feature that plots alternative routes to automatically bypass traffic problems. (Service not available in all areas.) The Uncharted’s navigation system doesn’t offer real-time traffic updates.

The EX30 Ultra’s Park Pilot Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. The Uncharted doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
