Compare the2026 Volvo XC40 VS 2026 BMW X3

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Volvo XC40 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW X3 doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the XC40 and X3 have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The XC40 Ultra has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The X3’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Volvo XC40 is safer than the BMW X3:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Volvo XC40 is safer than the BMW X3:

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the XC40 is 1.4% less likely to roll over than the X3.

As tested in Car and Driver the XC40 B5 is faster than the X3 30 xDrive 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder hybrid:

The XC40 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The X3 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better stopping power the XC40’s standard front brake rotors are larger than those on the X3:

For better maneuverability, the XC40’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the X3’s (37.4 feet vs. 40 feet).

The Volvo XC40 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 550 pounds less than the BMW X3.

The XC40 is 1 foot shorter than the X3, making the XC40 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The XC40 has .7 inches more front legroom, .9 inches more rear headroom and .6 inches more rear shoulder room than the X3.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the XC40 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the X3 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

The XC40 has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the X3.

The XC40 is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The X3 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

According to iSeeCars.com the 2026 Volvo XC40 retains 51.74% of its original value after 5 years, more than the 46.09% resale value of the 2026 BMW X3 after five years, which can save the Volvo’s owner up to $7823 in depreciation.
